Solanum alatum Moench
A branched, leafy, scarcely hairy to almost hairless annual. Stems 20 to 60 cm long. Leaves ovate, coarsely toothed to almost entire, from 5 to 7 cm long; petioles up to 2 cm long. Flowers in clusters of 2 to 6; peduncles 2 to 30 mm long; pedicels 4.5 to 12 mm long, elongating in fruit. Corolla with five spreading lobes, 8 to 15 mm across, white usually with a violet stripe on each lobe. Stamens yellow, up to 3 mm long, projecting forward, tightly clustered around the stigma. Calyx up to 2.5 mm long, with 5 lobes. Fruit is a berry 6 to 10 mm diameter, at first green, turning orange.
Local: Common in Gibraltar. Found mainly throughout the Upper Rock and southern parts.
Global: Found throughout much of the Mediterranean region.
Flowers all the year round.
Grows on waste and disturbed ground, roadsides and clearings.
