Solanum luteum Mill. subsp. luteum
Diagnostic description:
A branched, leafy glandular-hairy annual. Stems 20 to 60 cm long. Leaves broadly oblong, from 4.5 to 6 cm long, shallowly lobed; petioles 1.5 to 3 cm long. Flowers in clusters of 2 to 6 ; peduncles 3 to 15 mm long; pedicels 4 to 7 mm long, elongating in fruit. Corolla white, 8 to 15 mm across, with five spreading lobes. Stamens yellow, up to 2.5 mm long, projecting forward, tightly clustered around the stigma. Calyx up to 3 mm long, with 5 lobes. Fruit is a berry 7 to 10 mm diameter, at first green, turning orange.
Distribution:
Local: Very common and widespread thoughout Gibraltar, though less so on the Upper Rock.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region.
Ecology:
Flowers all the year around.
Habitat:
Grows on waste and disturbed ground.
