Solanum nigrum L.
A branched, leafy, somewhat hairy to almost hairless annual. Stems 20 to 70 cm long. Leaves ovate, from 6 to 10 cm long, entire or shallowly lobed; petioles 2.5 to 8 cm long. Flowers in clusters of 2 to 10; peduncles 1 to 2 cm long; pedicels 5 to 8 mm long, elongating in fruit. Corolla white, 5 to 10 mm across, with five spreading or reflexed lobes. Stamens yellow, about 2 mm long, projecting forward, tightly clustered around the stigma. Calyx up to 2.5 mm long, with 5 lobes. Fruit is a berry 5 to 8 mm diameter, at first dark green, turning black; poisonous.
Local:Rare in Gibraltar. Scattered plants found in various places, usually waste ground in urban areas.
Global: Found throughout Europe.
Flowers all the year round.
Grows on waste and disturbed ground.
Poisonous.
