Nerium oleander L.
Diagnostic description:
A robust shrub up to 4 m tall, with more or less erect stems. Leaves leathery, linear-lanceolate, opposite or in whorls of 3-4; 5 to 20 cm long. Flowers in terminal clusters. Corolla pink, red or white; 3 to 5 cm across, with 5 spreading lobes, and with toothed lobes arising from the throat. Fruit a pair of joined follicles 10 to 17 cm long. Seeds with brown hairy tufts.
Distribution:
Local: Quite common in Gibraltar. Found in gardens, parks, and other cultivated areas around Gibraltar
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region.
Ecology:
Flowers from July, August, September to October.
Habitat:
Grows along streams and rivers, and along dry water courses and gullies.
