Verbascum thapsus L. subsp. giganteum (Willk.) Nyman
Diagnostic description:
A tall, densely white woolly-hairy biennial, to 2 m tall. Basal leaves up to 40 cm long, oblong, ovate-oblong or elliptical, on short petioles. Stem leaves smaller, decreasing in size up the stem, decurrent. Flowers yellow, up to 4 cm across, in a thick, dense spike which sometimes branches from below. Stamens 5, with filaments densely covered with white hairs.
Distribution:
Local:Common in Gibraltar. Found on the East Side sand slopes.
Global: Endemic to the southern Iberian peninsula.
Ecology:
Flowers between May and June (July).
Habitat:
Grows on coastal sands.
