Clinopodium menthifolium (Host) Stace subsp. ascendens (Jord.) Govaerts
Diagnostic description:
An erect or ascending, hairy and very aromatic, branching perennial, to 50 cm tall. Leaves ovate, crenate; 1.5 to 4.5 cm long, with a strong minty smell when crushed. Flowers 1 to 1.5 cm long, pink with darker markings, in verticillasters forming branched, axillary clusters of 2 to 8 flowers. Calyx 5 to 7 mm long, the upper teeth much shorter than the lower ones.
Distribution:
Local: Common and widespread throughout the Upper Rock.
Global: Found in southern and western Europe, and in north Africa.
Ecology:
Flowers from September, October, November to December (January).
Habitat:
Grows in clearings in the maquis and waysides.
