Stachys arvensis (L.) L.
Diagnostic description:
A hairy annual with erect or ascending branched stems 10 to 40 cm long. Leaves ovate, cordate, crenate, 1.5 to 4 cm long; the basal ones petioled, the upper ones with very short petioles. Inflorescence a spike of verticillasters of 4 to 6 flowers. Corolla two-lipped, 5 to 7 mm, pale pink to purple. Calyx 5 to 6 mm long, with fine pointed teeth, hairy.
Distribution:
Local: Rare in Gibraltar. Found as a weed in cultivated plots.
Global: Found throughout Europe, north-west Africa and south-west Asia.
Ecology:
Flowers from (February) March to April (May).
Habitat:
Grows in fields and cultivated ground.
