Diagnostic description:
An erect, robust, usually unbranched biennial, with stems from 50 to 100 cm tall. Stems red-spotted, and with hairs with swollen red bases. Leaves broadly lanceolate, with crinkled margin. Flowers yellow, petals 2 to 5 cm long. Fruit long, cylindrical, with red-based hairs.
Distribution:
Local: Very rare in Gibraltar. Found on waste ground along North Mole.
Global: A native of America; introduced to Western and Central Europe; probably a garden escape.
Ecology:
Flowers from July, August to September.
Habitat:
Grows along roadsides and waste places.
