Lavatera cretica L.
A hairy annual or biennial. Stems generally erect and branching, up to 1.5 m tall. Leaves with long petioles, rounded in outline, cordate, with 5 to 7 lobes, the upper ones more deeply divided than the lower ones; margins crenate-toothed; up to 20 cm across. Flowers up to 4 cm across, in axillary clusters of 2 to 8. Petals notched, pale pink to violet with darker veins. Epicalyx with 3 oblong segments up to 6 mm long, fused at the base. Calyx with 5 broadly ovate segments 6 to 8 mm long, enlarging in fruit. Fruit with 7 to 10 smooth or lightly ribbed, hairy or hairless nutlets arranged in a ring.
Local: Very common and widespread throughout Gibraltar, including urban areas. Grows on waste ground and along waysides.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region and western Europe, and the Canary Islands.
Flowers from March, April to May (June).
