Euphorbia peplus L.
A small, hairless, annual. Stems erect, simple or branched from the base, up to 25 cm tall. Leaves obovate to rounded, entire, sometimes emarginate, up to 3 cm long. Bracts similar to the leaves but slightly longer; bracteoles ovate or obovate, up to 2 cm long. Inflorescence with 3 primary rays, further divided into 2 rays 5 to 8 times. Floral glands yellow, crescent-shaped, with fine, long horns. Fruit capsules rounded, 2 to 3mm across, with 3 clearly marked segments, each with 2 narrow wings down the back. Seeds oblong, greyish, pitted; darker inside the pits.
Local: Very common and widespread throughout Gibraltar.
Global: Found throughout Europe, north Africa, west Asia and the Canary Islands.
Flowers between (November) December, January, February, March, April, May and June (July).
Grows in cultivated and waste ground; waysides.
