Erodium malacoides (L.) L'Her.
Diagnostic description:
A hairy annual. Stems erect or decumbent, up to 60 cm long. Leaves 1 to 9 cm long; ovate, cordate, crenate, often shallowly 3 to 5 lobed. Flowers in umbels of 3 to 8 flowers. Petals violet-pink, 5 to 8 mm long. Awns of fruit 1.5 to 3.5 cm long. Fruits 4 to 5 mm long, hairy; pits usually with glands, and with a semi-circular furrow below.
Distribution:
Local: Not common in Gibraltar. Found throughout the Upper Rock and on Windmill Hill Flats.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region, south-west Asia and the Canary Islands.
Ecology:
Flowers from (January) March, April to May (June).
Habitat:
Grows on clearings, waysides, dry open places, stony ground, waste ground and fields.
