Medicago truncatula Gaertn.
A pubescent annual. Stems decumbent, 15 to 40 cm long. Leaves trifoliate, softly-hairy; leaflets 6 to 15 mm long, obovate to wedge-shaped to more or less rhombic. Stipules deeply toothed. Flowers yellow, 5 to 7 mm long; in clusters of 1 to 4 flowers. Peduncles 1 to 2 cm long, awned. Seed pods hairless, cylindrical, 6 to 8 mm diameter; spirally and tightly coiled with 4 to 6 turns. Spines stout, short, conical, 1.5 to 4 mm long, often interlocking, and lying more or less parallel to the axis of the fruit.
Local: Very common and widespread on the Upper Rock, North Front, and southern parts.
Global: Found in western and southern Europe, the Mediterranean region and the Canary Islands.
Flowers between (February) March, April, May and June.
Grows on dry, grassy places; waysides.
