Melilotus segetalis (Brot.) Ser.
Diagnostic description:
A hairless annual, with erect, simple or branching stems up to 60 cm tall. Leaves trifoliate; leaflets 1 to 3 cm long; obovate; serrated. Flowers in axillary racemes of from 10 to 40 flowers, 2 to 3.5 cm long, elongating in fruit. Flowers yellow, 5 to 7 mm long; standard and wings shorter than the keel. Seed pod brownish-green, 3 to 4 mm across, ovoid; veins form marked, transverse-concentric ridges.
Distribution:
Local: Rare in Gibraltar. Found mainly along the East Side and Europa Foreshore.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region.
Ecology:
Flowers from April to May (June).
Habitat:
Grows in fields, sandy soils and in waste ground.
