Ononis subcordata Cav.
Diagnostic description:
An erect or spreading annual, from 15 to 35 cm tall. The whole plant is covered in glandular hairs making it very sticky and aromatic. Leaves with a single ovate to elliptical leaflet with toothed margin, from 1 to 4 cm long. Flowers 1 to 1.5 cm long, yellow with red-veined standard, in a lax panicle. Peduncles with an awn from 5 to 12 mm long. Seed pods from 1 to 1.5 cm long.
Distribution:
Local: Not common in Gibraltar. Found around Martin’s Path and Mediterranean Road, and the firebreak along Charles V Wall.
Global: Found in the Mediterranean region and Portugal.
Ecology:
Flowers between (March) April, May and June.
Habitat:
Grows on stony ground, in garigue and clearings.
