Cakile maritima Scop.
Diagnostic description:
A hairless, glaucous, much branched annual. Stems procumbent or ascending, from 15 to 60 cm long. Leaves fleshy, pinnately lobed, with lobes sometimes widely toothed. Flowers with 4 petlas, from white to pink or lilac, 1 to 1.2 cm across, in racemes which elongate in fruit. Silicula from 10 to 20 cm long, in two distinct sections, 3-4 angled, pointed.
Distribution:
Local:Fairly common in Gibraltar. Found along the East Side and North Front.
Global: Found in the Mediterranean region, western and northern Europe, the Canary Islands and south-west Asia.
Ecology:
Flowers between (February) March, April, May, June, July and August.
Habitat:
A plant of coastal sands and rocks.
