Silene obtusifolia Willd.
A finely-haired annual, biennial or perennial. Stems erect or ascending, up to 30 cm tall. Leaves spathulate, rather thick, from 3 to 7 cm long. Inflorescence spike-like; one-sided. Flowers pale pink, about 2 cm across, only fully opening between evening and early morning; petals bifid. Calyx finely hairy, from 1 to 1.3 cm long, with 10 veins which are usually reddish. Capsule up to 8 mm long.
Local:Very common in Gibraltar. Grows mainly on the lower parts of the Rock, especially Europa Point and all round the littoral including North Front. Also found on the northern parts of the Upper Rock.
Global: Found in southern Iberian Peninsula, north Africa and the Canary Islands.
Flowers between (February) March, April, May and June (July).
Grows on stony and rocky places around the coast.
