Silene littorea Brot.
Diagnostic description:
A small annual plant. Stems simple or branched, erect, up to 15 cm tall, densely glandular-hairy and sticky. Flowers about 2 cm across, in a monochasium. Petals 5, rose coloured, bilobed. Calyx 1 to 1.7 cm long, 10-veined, glandular-hairy. Capsule up to 1 cm long.
Distribution:
Local: Rare in Gibraltar. Found on the East Side sand slopes.
Global: Found in southern Spain and Portugal, north-west Africa and Balearic Islands.
Ecology:
Flowers between (February) March, April and May (June).
Habitat:
Grows on coastal sands.
