Rumex bucephalophorus L.
A green or reddish annual. Stems erect or decumbent, more or less branched at the base, from 5 to 40 cm tall. Basal leaves sometimes forming a rosette, lanceolate to elliptical, sometimes spathulate, from 1 to 4 cm long; petiole to 5 cm long. Flowers reddish-green, about 1.5 mm long, in whorls of up to 4, forming lax spikes. Flower stalks curved downwards, of two kinds : short and slender with a joint half-way, or long, flattened, and club-shaped, and jointed at the base. Valves up to 5 mm long, oblong, with tiny tubercles at their base; those on the longer pedicels with a few teeth on the margins.
Local: Common in Gibraltar. Found on the East Side sand slopes and at Windmill Hill Flats.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region and in the Canary Islands.
Flowers from (March) April to May (June).
Grows on sandy soil.
