Rumex scutatus L. subsp. induratus (Boiss. & Reut.) Nyman
Diagnostic description:
A much branched perennial, forming a low shrub from 30 to 70 cm tall. Leaves glaucous, between 3 and 4 cm long, broad lanceolate to ovate, triangular heart-shaped, hastate; resembling a shield. Petiole to 9 cm long. Flowers about 3 mm across, greenish, in lax, branched clusters. Perianth segments enlarge in fruit and become flat and papery (called valves), pale green to pink, and about 1 cm across.
Distribution:
Local: Common in Gibraltar. Found mainly around Europa Flats, from Windmill Hill to Europa Foreshore. A small stand is also found in the Calpe Road area.
Global: Found in most of Europe.
Ecology:
Flowers from (January) April, May to June (July).
Habitat:
Grows on open ground.
