Frangula alnus Mill. subsp. baetica (Willk. & E.Rev.) Rivas Goday ex Devesa
A dioecious, deciduous shrub or tree up to 6 m tall, with smooth grey bark, and branches ascending at a sharp angle. Leaves alternate, elliptical or obovate, generally acuminate, 5 to 14 cm long, with 7 to 9 pairs of conspicuous lateral veins; more or less shiny dark green above, softly hairy beneath, especially on the veins. Margin entire but sometimes wavy; base rounded to wedge-shapead. Flowers in axillary clusters of 2 to 10; with 5 small petals, greenish-white, about 3 mm across. Fruit globose, 6 to 10 mm diameter; First green, then red and turning purplish black; usually containing 2 seeds about 5 mm across.
Local: Very rare in Gibraltar. Found in North Gorge.
Global: Found in the western Mediterranean region.
Flowers from March, April, May to June.
Grows in damp, shady woods, at the bottom of gullies and along water courses.
