Pallenis spinosa (L.) Cass. subsp. spinosa
An annual to 80 cm tall, branched in the upper parts, with lateral branches usually overtopping the central stem. Stem finely tomentose. Leaves oblong-lanceolate to elliptical, entire or finely toothed, narrowed to a spiny tip. Flower heads 2 to 3 cm across, yellow. Ray florets small, shorter than the outer involucral bracts, but longer than the inner ones. Involucral bracts lanceolate, 1 to 3 cm long with spiny tips; the inner ones oblong with a shorter spine. Achenes 2 to 3 mm long, with a pappus of tiny scales.
Local: Very common and widespread throughout the Upper Rock and southern parts.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region and in the Canary Islands.
Flowers between March, April, May and June.
Grows in clearings and waysides.
