Tragopogon porrifolius L.
An annual or biennial. Stems erect, 20 to 60 cm tall, generally branched. Leaves hairless, linear-lanceolate, swollen at the base, and clasping the stem; the upper ones 1.5 to 3 cm wide at the base. Flower head solitary, terminal, 2.5 to 5 cm across, lilac to reddish-purple. Only ray florets present. Peduncles much swollen below the flower head. Involucre up to 5 cm long, with one row of 8 to 10 bracts, which are about twice as long as the florets. Achenes 2.5 to 5 cm long, with a beak 1 to 3.5 cm long. Pappus of feathery hairs up to 3.5 cm long.
Local: Not common in Gibraltar. Found mainly on Windmill Hill Flats.
Global: Found throughout most of the Mediterranean region.
Flowers from April to May.
Grows on grassy, uncultivated ground, waste ground, waysides.
