Hypochaeris glabra L.
An annual. Stems hairless, simple or sparsely branched on the upper parts, up to 40 cm tall. Leaves all basal, hairless or slightly rough-hairy; oblanceolate, entire to pinnately lobed or toothed; rarely pinnatifid. Flower heads yellow, up to 1 to 1.5 cm across, solitary, on long peduncles which are not swollen at the top. Only ray florets present. Involucre up to 1.8 cm long, with many rows of bracts. Bracts hairless, or rarely with some silky hairs along the mid-vein. Achenes rough, the outer ones up to 4 mm long without beak; the inner ones 5 to 12 mm long with a beak 4 to 8 mm long. Pappus formed of many rows of hairs: the outer ones rough, the inner ones feathery; 8 to 12 mm long.
Local: Rare in Gibraltar. Found as a weed in the Alameda Gardens.
Global: Found throughout most of Europe, north-west Africa and south-west Asia. Introduced in many parts of the world.
Flowers from March, April, May to June.
Generally grows on dry fields.
