Hedypnois rhagadioloides (L.) F.W.Schmidt
A hairy annual. Stems spreading or ascending, generally branched; 10 to 40 cm long. Leaves bristly-haired, elliptical or oblanceolate; the lower ones toothed or pinnatifid. Flower heads yellow, about 1.5 cm across, solitary. Only ray florets present; the outer ones often tinged with green or violet on the underside. Peduncles distinctly swollen on the upper parts. Involucre 9 to 12 mm long. Bracts hairless or bristly-haired, in 2 rows, the outer ones much shorter than the inner ones. Inner bracts hardening and thickening, and strongly incurved at fruiting time. Outer achenes up to 8 mm long, incurved, with a crown of scales about 0.6 mm wide. Innermost achenes with a pappus of up to 6 bristles 4 to 6 mm long.
Local: Not very common in Gibraltar. Mainly found at North Front Cemetery.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region.
Flowers from (March) April to May (June).
Grows on dry, sandy or stony ground, waysides, cultivated and fallow fields.
