Leptodictyum riparian (Hedw.) Warnst
This moss has light green to green/yellowish leaves that are on average 2mm in length and 0.7mm in width. The leaves are spearhead shape, widest above the base. The leaf margin is smooth with no border. The single nerve goes up three quarters the length of the leaf but never reaches the tip. The basal cells on the leaf are oblong and contain chloroplasts. The middle and top cells are longer than the basal cells and taper at both ends. The smooth seta is red in colour and approximately 15mm in length. The 3mm capsule is held at approximately 45 degrees angle. The capsule has 16 teeth which are easy to see with a hand lens. The procumbent or ascending irregularly branched shoots appear flattened but they are variable.
Has only been found in the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens on a bench in the "Dell" directly underneath the bridge.
Occurs in wet places, as its specific name implies, such as streams, pools and wet woodlands. Its location in the Dell is often wet due to regular spraying from a nearby water sprinkler.
