Arisarum simorrhinum Durieu
A herbaceous perennial. Leaves all basal, sagittate or cordate. Petiole tinged violet, up to 30 cm long. Flowers in a brownish-purple spadix which has a curved upper part, surrounded by a spathe 3 to 5cm long. Spathe fused into a tube, wide at the base and with the upper part curved forming a hood over the spadix. Spathe tube white or greenish, with brownish-purple stripes; the upper part brownish-purple. Peduncle with purplish spots, shorter than the leaves. The flowers have an unpleasant smell.
Local: Very common and widespread throughout Gibraltar, excluding built-up areas.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region and Portugal.
Flowers from (October) November, December to January (February).
Grows in shady places; usually in rocky outcrops.
In the past it has been used for medicinal purposes.
