Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.
A rhizomatose, creeping perennial. Stems erect or ascending, 10 to 40 cm tall, hairless. Leaf blade 1.5 to 13 cm long, 2 to 4 mm wide; arranged in two rows; flat, inrolled or folded; hairy or hairless. Ligule a row of hairs about 0.5 mm long. Inflorescence 2 to 7 finger-like spikes 2 to 6 cm long, arising from the same point. Spikelets of 1 floret, 2 to 3 mm long, numerous, often violet tinged, in two dense rows on the lower face of the rachis. Lower glume 1.5 to 1.8 mm long; the upper one 1.8 to 2.3 mm long. Lemma 2 to 2.5 mm long; 3-veined; keeled.
Local: Quite common in Gibraltar. Mainly on the North Front, along the East Side, and southern parts.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region, and world-wide.
Flowers all year around, but mainly from (May) June, July, August to September (October).
Grows on fields, waysides, dry sandy and stony ground.
