Sporobolus pungens (Schreb.) Kunth
A rhizomatose, creeping perennial. Stems ascending or decumbent, branching from the base, 10 to 40 cm long. Leaf blade 2 to 10 cm long, 1.5 to 5 mm wide; numerous, in two distinct rows, usually sticking out at an angle; glaucous, flat or inrolled, slightly hairy. Ligule a row of hairs about 0.3 mm long. Inflorescence an oval or elliptical, greenish or violet panicle, 2.5 to 6.5 cm long, with erect branches. Spikelets with 1 floret; ovate-lanceolate, 1.5 to 3 mm long. Glumes keeled and pointed; the lower one 1.8 to 2.4 mm long; the upper one 2.5 to 3 mm long.
Local:Not common in Gibraltar. Found in the area above Blackstrap Cove on the East Side, on Western Beach, and Europa Point.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region.
Flowers from (July) August to September.
Grows on dunes and coastal sands.
