Stipa tenacissima L.
A densely tufted perennial with stems to 1.5 m long. Leaf blades to 50 cm long, narrow, twisted and stiff, with a sharpish point. Ligule bifid, densely cottony, the ones of the lower leaves up to 7 cm long. Spikelets one-flowered, in a dense panicle about 20 cm long. Glumes 2.5 to 3 cm long, 3 to 6 -veined, hairless. Lemma 8 to 10 mm long, densely hairy; awn 5 to 6 cm long, markedly bent and with a hairy lower third.
Local: Very common and widespread in Gibraltar. Mainly from the middle to southern parts of the Upper Rock.

Global: Also found in the southern Iberian peninsula, north Africa and the Balearic Islands.
Flowers from (March) April, May to June.
Grows in rocky places; clearings and garigue.
Used in the making of rope, paper, mats, shoe soles, etc.
