Lagurus ovatus L.
Diagnostic description:
A solitary or tufted annual, erect or ascending from a bent base, 10 to 50 cm tall. Leaf blades light green to greyish-green, softly hairy, to 20 cm long. Ligule 1 to 3 mm long, squared off at the top, hairy. Spikelets in a dense, ovoid to nearly cylindrical, cottony panicle 2 to 7cm long. Spikelets about 1 cm long. Glumes 6 to 11 mm long, densely hairy. Lemmas 6 to 12 mm long, with 2 narrow teeth 1.5 to 5 mm long, and with a bent awn 1 to 2 cm long, which sticks out from the panicle.
Distribution:
Local: Very common and widespread throughout Gibraltar.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region and the Canary Islands.
Ecology:
Flowers from April, May to June.
Habitat:
Grows in clearings and waysides.
