Asplenium onopteris L.
Diagnostic description:
A tufted perennial. Leaves triangular-lanceolate in outline, bi- to tripinnatisect, shiny dark green, between 10 and 20 cm long, but can reach 45 cm. Pinnules linear-ovate to linear, with acute teeth, from 2 mm to 3 cm long; basal pinnae 3 to 8 cm long, two to three times longer than the middle ones, curving towards the apex of the leaves. Petioles shiny reddish-brown, as long as or shorter than the leaves.
Distribution:
Local: Very rare in Gibraltar. Found along Mediterranean Steps, and here they are generally found growing around the bases of the dwarf fan palm.
Global: Found in the Mediterranean region and the Canary Islands.
Ecology:
Spores ripen from (October) November, December, January, February, March, April to May (June).
