Melica ciliata L.
A tufted or creeping perennial with erect stems from 20 to 70 cm long. Leaf blade 7 to 20 cm long; 0.1 to 0.5 cm wide; finely hairy, in-rolled or flat with inrolled tip. Ligule 3 to 6 mm long, blunt. Inflorescence an often nodding dense panicle 5 to 20 cm long, usually lobed, covered with long, silky hairs. Spikelets ovate, densely hairy, with one fertile floret, 4 to 8 mm long. Glumes hairless, with wide papery margins; the lower one 3.5 to 5.5 mm long, ovate; the upper one 6 to 8 mm long, lanceolate and pointed. Lemma 4.5 to 5 mm long, with papery margin, with spreading hairs 3 to 4.5 mm long on the back.
Local: Not common in Gibraltar. Mainly found in scattered places and roadsides along the Upper Rock.
Global: Found throughout the west Mediterranean region.
Flowers from (April) May to June.
Grows in dry, rocky and waste places; scrub; waysides.
