Vulpia ciliata Dumort.
A tufted annual with erect or ascending stems up to 40 cm tall. Leaf blade linear up to 13 cm long and 0.2 to 2 mm wide; more or less hairy, often inrolled; green, often purplish. Ligule 0.1 to 0.5 mm long, squared off at the top. Inflorescence a panicle or raceme 1 to 14 cm long, linear-oblong; erect or arching. Spikelets with 1 to 3 fertile florets on the lower part, and 3 to 7 sterile ones above; 5 to 10 mm long. Lower glume 0.3 to 0.9 mm long, 1-veined, hairless; upper glume 1.5 to 3 mm long, 1 to 3-veined, hairless. Lemma 4.5 to 6.5 mm long, with long silky hairs, and a stiff rough awn 4 to 13 mm long.
Local: Not common in Gibraltar. Found mainly on the East Side sand slopes and Western Beach.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region, west and south Europe, north Africa and south-west Asia.
Flowers from April to May (June).
Grows on pastures, waste and dry sandy ground, garigue; often coastal.
