Lolium rigidum Gaudin
A tufted or solitary annual. Stems erect or ascending, hairless, ribbed, to 100 cm tall. Leaf blade linear, up to 25 cm long, and 2 to 8 mm wide; hairless or rough hairy, with a pronounced mid-vein. Ligule 0.5 to 1.5 mm long, squared off at the top. Inflorescence a spike up to 30 cm long. Spikelets with 5 to 10 florets; 5 to 20 mm long, elliptical or lanceolate; alternate and singly on opposite sides of the rachis, and with one edge against the rachis. Glume 6 to 20 mm, half to two thirds the length of the spikelet. Lemma 5 to 8 mm long, with or without an awn up to 3 mm long.
Local: Very common and widespread in Gibraltar, though mainly from North Front and along the East Side to southern parts, with scattered plants elsewhere.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region and introduced world-wide.
Flowers from (March) April, May to June (August).
Grows on pastures, open ground.
