Allium ampeloprasum L.
Diagnostic description:
A bulbous perennial with cylindrical stems between 40 to 150 cm tall. Leaves linear, flat, sheathing the lower half to one third of the stem. Flowers about 5 mm long with 6 perianth segments, in a dense, spherical cluster from 4 to 8 cm diameter. Perianth segments purple with a darker mid-vein. Capsules about 4 mm across.
Distribution:
Local: Very common and widespread throughout the Rock, especially around the East Side and Europa area.
Global: Found in south-west Europe and throughout the Mediterranean region.
Ecology:
Flowers from (April) May to June (July).
Habitat:
Grows on open ground and clearings.
