Allium roseum L.
Diagnostic description:
A bulbous perennial with cylindrical stems from 30 to 70 cm tall, and smelling strongly of garlic. Leaves linear, flat, to 30 cm long. Flowers erect, bell-shaped, up to 1 cm across, from bright pink to almost white, in a more-or-less rounded head 4 to 6 cm across. Perianth segments 6; they have a pink mid-vein. Capsule 3 to 6 mm across.
Distribution:
Local: Common and widespread, mainly on the Upper Rock, with scattered stands elsewhere.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region, Portugal, north Africa and the Canary Islands.
Ecology:
Flowers from (March) April to May (June).
Habitat:
Grows on clearings and waysides.
