Pancratium maritimum L.
Diagnostic description:
A bulbous plant with bulb 5 to 7 cm across. Leaves all basal, glaucous, linear and twisted, to 60 cm long. Scapes to 45 cm tall. Flowers white, fragrant, in umbels of 3 to 15 flowers. Flowers about 10 cm across. Perianth segments 6, linear-elliptical, up to 5 cm long. Corona about 3 cm long, with 12 triangular lobes and the 6 stamens fused to it. Capsule 3 to 4 cm long.
Distribution:
Local:Not common in Gibraltar. Grows in sandy places near the sea. Found on the East Side sand slopes, Western Beach, and at North Front Cemetery, where it is becoming increasingly rare due to persistent clearing of vegetation.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region and Portugal.
Ecology:
Flowers from July to September.
