Pinus halepensis Mill.
Diagnostic description:
A medium sized tree, to 20 m tall, with trunk and branches often twisted. The canopy is generally open and rounded; the bark is silvery-grey when young, becoming darker with reddish-brown fissures; it lacks the scales typical of Pinus pinea. Needles in pairs, pale green, between 6 and 15 cm long, flexible. Cones conical, 5 to 12 cm long, shiny reddish-brown. Seeds 5 to 7 mm long, with a wing 2 to 3 cm long.
Distribution:
Local: Common in Gibraltar. Introduced in various places round the Rock, especially roadsides and footpaths along the Upper Rock.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region.
Ecology:
Flowers between (February) March, April and May.
