Trifolium campestre Schreb.
An erect or ascending, branched, scarcely hairy ,annual from 5 to 20 cm tall. Leaves trifoliate; petioles up to 25 mm long. Leaflets 5 to 15 mm long, obovate to elliptical, finely toothed. Stipules long pointed. Inflorescence spherical, dense, axillary, 1 to 1.5 cm across, many-flowered. Peduncles 5 to 30 mm long. Flowers yellow turning brown as they age, 4 to 5 mm long,. The standards are broad and flat, with longitudinal ridges; they are curved over the wings and keel, and are papery to the touch. Pedicels and generally shorter than the calyx, downward curving in fruit. Calyx papery, 5-veined, the upper teeth shorter than the tube, the lower ones much longer.
Local: Very common in Gibraltar. Found throughout the Upper Rock, North Front and southern parts
Global: Found throughout Europe, north-west Africa and south-west Asia.
Flowers between (March) April, May and June (July).
Grows in clearings, fields, waste ground and waysides.
