Papaver hybridum L.
Diagnostic description:
A bristly annual. Stems up to 50 cm tall, simple or branched. Leaves bi- or tripinnatisect, up to 20 cm long. Flowers with 4 petals; 2 to 4 cm across. Petals crimson with a black basal patch. Pedicels with adpressed or erect hairs. Capsule from ellipsoid to globular, about 1 cm long, covered with stiff bristles.
Distribution:
Local: Very rare in Gibraltar. Found at North Front Cemetery.
Global: Found throughout most of Europe, north Africa and western Asia.
Ecology:
Flowers from (March) April to May (June).
Habitat:
Grows in fields, waysides, disturbed and waste ground.
