Diagnostic description:
An erect annual. Stems 30 to 60 cm tall, simple or scarcely branched. Leaves oblanceolate, pinnatisect to bipinnatifid, up to 10 cm long. Flowers with 4 petals; 3 to 7 cm across. Petals pale red, with or without a black basal patch. Pedicels with adpressed hairs. Capsule oblong-ovoid, hairless, 1.5 to 2 cm long; 2 to 3 times as long as broad.
Distribution:
Local: Not common in Gibraltar. Found from North Front, and along the East Side. Also as a weed in cultivated areas such as Alameda Gardens.
Global: Found throughout most of Europe, north Africa, and Asia.
Ecology:
Flowers between (March) April, May and June.
Habitat:
Grows on disturbed and waste ground, fields and waysides.
