Chenopodium murale L.
Diagnostic description:
An erect, slightly mealy, hairless annual. Stems up to 50 cm tall, erect, green, sometimes flushed with purple. Leaves ovate to rhombic, irregularly and sharply toothed, up to 6 cm long; the upper leaves sometimes narrower than the lower ones. Flowers greenish, tiny, in crowded clusters, forming short axillary or terminal panicles. Perianth of 5 segments. Achenes up to 1.4 mm across, disc-shaped, black, held horizontally inside the ovary.
Distribution:
Local: Not very common, but widespread throughout Gibraltar.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region.
Ecology:
Flowers throughout the year, but mainly between March, April, May, June and July.
Habitat:
Grows on disturbed and waste ground, and on sandy soil.
