Fissidens viridulus (Sw.) Wahlenb.
Diagnostic description:
One of the distinguishing features of Fissidens is the presence of a conduplicate or sheathing lamina (“Pockets”). Fissidens viridulus is a minute species with an overall height of 3 - 5mm. It has between 4 - 7 pairs of leaves each being approximately 1mm x 0.2mm. The leaf margins/borders are made up of 1 - 2 rows of cells. The leaf tip is acute with conquer sides. The plant produces reddish / brownish rhizoids. The length of the seta is about 5mm. The capsule is curved. When mature and open the tip of the capsule has a distinctive orange / reddish coloration.
