Bryum torquescens Bruch ex De Not.
The overall height of the gametophyte varies from 0.5 - 1.5cm. Most specimens observed tend to be at the lower end of the spectrum. They are green to yellowish green in colour but can sometimes tend to brown. The shoots in dry plants have a corkscrew appearance, with the leaves spirally twisted around the stem. The broad ovate-oblong, spatulate leaves are 2.5mm x 0.7mm. They are widest above the halfway point. The leaf margins are narrowly recurved and have a border of narrow cells that can be seen with a microscope. The leaf nerve extends into a pale green hair point which varies in length. A more or less cylindrical to pear-shaped drooping capsule, which is contracted at the mouth, is produced. On average the capsule measures 5mm x 1.5mm. The reddish seta is between 2 - 3cm tall.
Found in the Northern Defences, Willis's area, Jew's Gate, Signal Station, Douglas Path and Inglis Way.
Damp soils in clearings. Less commonly on old damp walls and waysides.
