Frullania dilatata (L.) Dumort.
This is a very small leafy liverwort with shoots between 0.7 - 1.5 mm wide. Leaves are up to 1mm wide. The rounded lobed leaves can be seen to have a large helmet-shaped lobule attached to it. The stems are pinnately or bi-pinnately branched. They form flat greenish or brownish patches that grow closely appressed to the bark of trees.
The warty perianth that encloses the archegonia is pear shaped bearing numerous prominent tubercles on its surface. This is a distinctive observable feature. The sporophyte emerges from this. Pear shaped perianths surrounding the developing sporophytes are common.
They are very tolerant to desiccation and are good indicators of clean air.
Local: Inglis Way.
