Anacamptis pyramidalis (L.) Rich.
Diagnostic description:
A herbaceous perennial. Stem leaves linear-lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, the lower ones to 25 cm long; with 2 to 3 brownish scales at the base of the stem. Stem slender, 20 to 60 cm tall. Flowers pink, about 8 mm across, with a thin spur at the base 1 to 1.5 mm long; lip deeply 3-lobed; arranged in a dense, many-flowered spike 2 to 8 cm long, at first conical, becoming more or less cylindrical.
Distribution:
Local: Very rare locally; only found on Mediterranean Steps, though none has been seen in recent years. Probably extinct locally.
Global: Found throughout most of Europe and the Mediterranean region.
Ecology:
Flowers from April to May (June).
Habitat:
Grows in clearings and waysides.
