Scilla peruviana L.
Diagnostic description:
A bulbous perennial with stems from 10 to 40 cm long. Bulb about 6 cm across. Leaves all basal, linear-lanceolate, shiny, 40 to 60 cm long. Flowers 1.5 to 2 cm across with 6 perianth segments, blue to violet, in a dense, corymb-like hemispherical raceme of many flowers, which elongates and becomes laxer with age. Capsule 5 to 10 mm diameter.
Distribution:
Local: Very common and widespread throughout the Upper Rock, the East Side and southern parts of Gibraltar.
Global: Found in the western Mediterranean region, Portugal and the Canary Islands.
Ecology:
Flowers from (February) March to April (May).
Habitat:
Grows on open ground, clearings and waysides.
Uses:
Often cultivated as a garden plant.
