Anagyris foetida L.
A deciduous, laxly branched shrub, 1 to 3 m tall, which gives off an unpleasant smell, especially when the leaves are crushed. Leaves trifoliate; leaflets elliptical, 3 to 7 cm long. Flowers greenish-yellow, pendulous, 2 to 2.5 cm long, in short axillary racemes of 4 to 6. Standard has a blackish blotch and is about half the length of the wings. Seed pods 8 to 20 cm long, pendulous, somewhat constricted between the 4 to 6 violet or yellow seeds.
Local: Rare in Gibraltar, mainly found in the Governor’s Lookout area, around the lower parts of the Moorish Castle and at Breakneck Battery.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region.
Flowers from (December) January to February (March).
Grows on dry, stony places; roadsides.
All parts of this plant are poisonous, particularly the seeds.
