Glaucium flavum Crantz
Diagnostic description:
An erect, much branched, sparsely hairy, glaucous perennial or biennial, to 80 cm tall. Leaves glaucous, up to 30 cm long, 1 to 2-pinnatifid, with ovate or oblong segments which can be entire, lobed or toothed. Flowers with 4 petals, yellow, 6 to 7 cm across. Capsules very elongated and curved, to around 20 cm long.
Distribution:
Local: Common in Gibraltar. Found from North Front and along the East Side, to Europa and Windmill Hill Flats, with scattered plants elsewhere around coastal areas.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region and in most of Europe.
Ecology:
Flowers between March, April, May, June and July (September).
Habitat:
Coastal areas.
Risk statement:
The roots of this plant are poisonous.
