Delphinium ambiguum L.
Diagnostic description:
An annual with long, spreading, branching stems from 20 to 80 cm long. The upper leaves are linear, the lower ones deeply divided into linear lobes. Flowers 2 to 3 cm long, dark violet, in a lax panicle of between 2 and 10 flowers. Outer perianth segments 5, 7 to 10 mm long, the upper one extending to a spur 1.5 to 2 cm long. Inner perianth segments 4, the lateral ones with limb 4 to 6 mm long, rounded, well exserted. Fruit with 3 carpels.
Distribution:
Local: Common in Gibraltar. Found mainly on the East Side sand slopes and less so at North Front.
Global: Found throughout the Iberian peninsula and in north Africa.
Ecology:
Flowers between April, May, June, July and August (October).
Habitat:
Coastal sands.
